Behind bars

'In 2005 a radical queer gathering, by the name of Queeruption, set out through the streets of Barcelona to protest against the consumerist lifestyles of the commercial LGBT community. Eight people were arrested at the end of the demonstration and were detained and tortured over the weekend. To help raise money for legal expenses, a new project emerged local to London – BEHIND BARS – a diverse crew of DIY activists, performers and perverts. Through our fundraising events, the crew managed to raise money to help fight the case, and in 2009 the court declared total absolution. Since Behind Bars started in the summer of 2006, the crew has managed to raise awareness and support to a multitude of like-minded causes.

Our aim is to celebrate our differences in a safer space where we gather in stake of sexual and gender equality, to shed the -isms that provoke the phobic and paranoid relations that lead to segregation – to create a space for those who don’t belong – those who don’t belong in a world in a world in which minimal deviance is accepted only if it’s constrained within the tight straightjacket of consumerism and consensus; who refuse to accept LGBT liberation as a justification for colonial and racist attitudes – those who are not willing to accept the gender roles as they stand, rejecting both the non consensual submission of women and gender itself as a fixed identity. We are only as free as the limits we impose on ourselves.

Behind Bars is a volunteer project and raises money by donation, embracing the fluidity of the queer community, offering a progressive platform for those who have something to share – so please, don’t hesitate to get involved.
Due to the limitations of what can be achieved within an event, a sister project – BEYOND BARS - is springing into action. Here we hope to offer alternative outreach functions by means of workshops, discussions, spoken word, film screenings, exhibitions and more!

We attempt to make our events as wheelchair and (dis)ability friendly as possible but due to the nature of the spaces we inhabit, this isn’t always easy. More information in context with each event will be available on the hotline. If you desire physical assistance, members of the crew are always willing (and trained) to do so. '
